About the Artist

Eileen Sprague grew up in New York City where, through the gift of living in a metropolitan area, she was exposed to great works of art.

Eileen is a graduate of New York University, received her Masters at State University of New York  – New Paltz. She has done graduate art work at Hunter College and Woodstock, NY Art Association as well as Sedona Art Center.

Her love of sculpture blossomed when she studied under the late well-known sculptor Alfred Van Loen. Moving to Woodstock, New York gave Eileen the opportunity to have her own studio and further develop her art through classes and private instruction.  She continued to pursue her art in Sedona, Arizona where she lived several years while running a successful Hot Air Balloon company.

Currently, Eileen resides in San Diego. She has shown her work in many local galleries and has won several awards, both for her sculptures and paintings.

Her sculptures are primarily of marble, alabaster, onyx and bronze and her paintings are predominantly oil on canvas.

Artist’s Statement

I have always been a tactile person, so it is fitting that my first love of art was sculpture. Visits to museums in New York City, my place of birth, found me in rooms containing large marble sculptures. At that time, being able to touch them and feel the smoothness and contours connected me to the artist in a profound way.

Having the opportunity to work with several well-known artists and living in an artist community, both in Woodstock, New York and Sedona, Arizona exposed me to different mediums: hence my ventures into painting, gourds and other expressions of art. Having the opportunity to study in Carrara, Italy was a life long dream and an inspiration being where Michelangelo produced his great works of art.  Living in San Diego and being a member of many of the local galleries and art associations has expanded my “art family”.

I feel that the world is my playground and that my art is constantly evolving. I hope you enjoy the expressions of what I feel in an organic process.
